DESCRIPTION:When it comes to race and racism\, Moravians have our own stories of villains and heroes\, complacency and prophecy\, complicity and resistance. Moravian archival records\, both North and South\, reveal a long-term insider view of the actions and decisions of church leaders\, congregations\, agencies\, and Synods. Some of these have lain dormant\, without public discussion\, for decades or centuries. We’ll explore some of the lowlights and highlights of what Moravians have done––for worse and for better––with respect to slavery\, segregation\, and discrimination. These sometimes sobering\, sometimes inspiring stories offer both a lens and a mirror\, as we look at “them” then and ourselves now. The Rev. Dr. Frank Crouch will be our guest preacher on June 1st and will present his two-part lecture series on Wednesday\, June 4 and Wednesday\, June 11 at 7 p.m. in the Christian Education building\, lower level. SUMMARY:Great Sabbath Lovefeast
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Great Sabbath Lovefeast in the Central Moravian Church Sanctuary at 2 p.m. on April 19\, featuring warm fellowship and a spiritually enriching musical respite from the more solemn experience of the rest of Holy Week. While the congregation sings\, buns carried in baskets and mugs filled with coffee carried on trays are distributed to the worshipers in the pews by men and women designated as sacristans. After all are served\, the congregation partakes of the simple fare to the accompaniment of choir anthems or instrumental music. The mugs are then collected during more congregational singing. The Lovefeast concludes with a benediction by the minister. Through the years not only Moravians\, but also many visitors have come to appreciate the deep sense of Christian fellowship experienced at these services.
