Bethlehem’s Hidden Gem: The D&L Canal Towpath Trail at Sand Island

If you have lived in Bethlehem or the Lehigh Valley for any amount of time, odds are you are familiar with Sand Island and the Canal Towpath near the Lehigh River. It may have been for a leisurely stroll with a four-legged friend, an easy jog on a Sunday morning, or perhaps for a concert when Musikfest used part of Sand Island for the evening headliners.
Most of us who live and work downtown have some kind of interaction with the Towpath on a regular basis. At Aardvark, we often use Sand Island and the surrounding area as a site for our group runs, and some of us hop on before or after work for a quick workout.
However, despite its accessibility and popularity, many people in the City don’t realize that the Towpath at Sand Island is part of a much larger organization, the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor. Frequently referred to as “The D&L”, the Corridor stretches from Wilkes Barre to Bristol, PA. The D&L organization not only coordinates trail improvements and maintenance, but also provides a place for our community to learn about the history of the Towpath, which was an important cog in the industrial growth of the Lehigh Valley.
